Ganges
is crossed by Herault
and goes into the Vis, it's a very much appreciated
stopfor those who like bathing in rivers. This lovely
little town makes it possible to stop, cool down,
have something to eat at a resaurant or simply buy
supplies for a picnic by the river. You can also choose
to spend a few days there as many catering formulas
exist.
The little village of Laroque neighbouring Ganges
is splendid with its stone made cottages. You can
sit down at the beautiful terrasses by the water or
take a walk throught the little street of the village
and discover its castle.
The
close by Gorges de la Vis present is simply splendid.
To get there you have to cross Ganges and follow the
road to Saint Laurent le minier, Cirque de Navacelles.
The first really nice bathing spot is right underneath
the bridge in the direction of Saint Laurent le minier.
The little cascade created a charming natural pool
making it a delight to take a swim!
If you keep following the road you encounter other
places were you can access the Vis, however a little
walk might be necessary to get to the quieter parts
for the peace and quiet lovers. Eventually after having
climed up the Gorges you will get to the Cirque de
Navacelles: the view is just astonishing. The river
has made a canyon in the centre of the plateaux du
Larzac, the little village de Navacelles was then
built in this little peace of heaven.
The gorges of Herault can be
admire partly
by following the road from Montpellier to Ganges.
Many bathing spots and canoë kayaks rental places
can be found along the way. Many types of routes are
offered. Some of the accessible event o young children.
Some renting places accept dogs on canoes and kayaks.
In the Ganges region, you can also
visit the beautiful Grotte
des Demoiselles discoverd in 1770. It
was studied in details by Etienne Martel at the end
of the XIX century (he is also the creator of the
Société de Spéléologie).
The cave was for the inhabitants of the region the
propriety of Fairies ( they were called the "demoiselles"
and were supposed to live in the main room of the
cave). A funiculaire station was dug in the mountain.
From this entrance you will cross a number of narrow
corridos and rooms to get to the large room which
is 120m long, 80m large and 50 high. The naturale
architectureis imposing and the celling wich seems
to be hanging on air is in fact supported by mineral
columns. The visit last approximatly an hour.
