The
Peyrou Walk It starts at the
Arc de Triomphe as a continuation of Avenue Foch and
ends at the Esplanade des Arceaux.
Being situated on the highest point of Montpellier
the walk offers a splendid view of the roofs of the
town and other beautiful surrondings such as the Pic
Saint Loup. It was created in the XVII century and is
home to a magninficant statue of Louis the XIV.
Davillier the architect designed this terasse that leads
to the acqueduc a few decades later. The later allows
the town to use the water from the Sant Clement source.
As the terrasse was built the architect Giral made a
few changes to the Acqueduc by building the Château
d'eau (water tower) housing the water reservoir.
The statue of Louis the XIV was only brought to the
Peyrou in 1718 and then as most royal portraits or statues
destroyed during the revolution and then rebuilt during
the July Monarchy in 1838.
The Peyrou is since its opening a walk and not a garen
or a parc. It has this special staus since the ... and
remains open at night. In the past a little house was
situated at the enrance and was home to a warden in
charge of looking after the security in the Perou after
dawn.
The Peyrou is composede of different terrasses linked
to each other by various sumptious stairs. When the
weather is clear it offers a view not to be missed!
