The
cathedral Saint Pierre
This church
looks almost like a medieval fortress with its
two towers and imposing porch. Its construction
was ordered by the pope Urbain V at the end
of the 14th century, it became cathedral in
the 16th century when the archbishop's palace
was transferred from Maguelone to Montpellier.
The medical college which was put in an old
Benedictine covent is attached to the cathedral.
This Church is the only survivor of this time,
the other places of worship were destroyed during
the particularly violent wars of religion in
Montpellier where Protestantism was always influential.
However, the cathedral Saint Pierre suffered
damages when it was attacked with blows of gun
of the Protestants who were attacking from the
place of Canourgue which over looks it.
It is rather of Gothic style, its two turns
shelter many waste-gas mains, it however presents
certain aspects of Roman style such as the fact
that it has only one nave. Its interior was
changed many times since its creation with successive
restorations during the 17th century and the
19th century.
